Steaming and foaming milk with an espresso machine takes a little practice, but it really does a beautiful job, once you get the hang of it.
Steaming and Foaming Milk with an Espresso Maker
- Put enough water into your water reservoir when you are making your espresso to leave extra for steaming the milk. Also, when you make your espresso, you need to turn the dial to off as soon as the machine makes the desired amount espresso. Don’t let it keep going until it stops on its own, or it will just use up all the water you need to have for steaming your milk.
- If you have a frothing pitcher, use that instead of a ceramic mug. If you decide to steam and foam your milk right in the mug, choosing the right ceramic mug is important. I have found that a tall skinny mug that just fits under the frothing spout works really well. Measure the desired amount of milk into the cup, and make sure there’s enough room at the top for the milk to expand and foam. DON’T USE A GLASS MUG for this because the milk will get very hot, very quickly, and glass could shatter in your hand.
- Hold your mug with your right hand, and submerge the tip into the milk. Turn the dial to steam with your left hand.
- Let the milk steam with the tip submerged until you hear a change in the sound the machine is making. It will be a kind of sucking noise.
- Start to slowly move your mug down. As the tip of the frothing wand comes closer to the surface of the milk, it will make the foam. Turn the dial to off when you have the desired amount of foam. Remove the mug from under the wand and you are ready to add your steamed milk to your espresso and make your favorite drink!
