What is a cappuccino?
So, what is a cappuccino? The perfect cappuccino is made with equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and a thick layer of microfoam on top.
The microfoam is made by steaming the milk and then frothing it until it doubles in volume, with bubbles that are so small you can’t even see them. This process makes the milk light, yet thick, and oh so decadent!
Traditional cappuccino is made with a double shot of bold espresso, but you can make it with a single shot or add more milk to make what’s called a wet cappuccino. It will have a milder espresso flavor and a creamier taste.
Cappuccino is traditionally served in a five to six-ounce, bowl-shaped preheated cup. In Italy, they’re traditionally served in the morning, but here in the US, we love them any time of day.
No matter how you like your cappuccino, or what time of day you drink it, enjoying your perfect cappuccino at home is fun, convenient, and oh indulgent!
Here’s How to Make a Cappuccino at Home – Step by Step
Are you ready to make a perfect cappuccino at home, just like your favorite barista? Here’s everything you need to know!
Ingredients for cappuccino:
- Whole espresso beans or dark roast coffee beans: You’ll need about two tablespoons of finely ground coffee to make a cappuccino. We love Lavazza Super Crema Medium Espresso Roast, Peet’s Espresso Forte Dark Roast, and illy Intenso Dark Roast whole coffee beans, but any medium to dark roast coffee bean you have on hand will work just fine.
- Filtered Water: Always use filtered water for the best taste and to extend the life of your machine.
- Whole milk: For the best results and most authentic taste, always use full-fat dairy milk. You can use low-fat milk or non-dairy milk substitutes, but you’ll sacrifice much of the foamy smoothness that makes a cappuccino so special. And, the foam will dissolve and disappear fairly quickly, which can be incredibly disappointing. For the creamiest cappuccino and longest-lasting foam, some cappuccino enthusiasts even substitute cream for the milk.
How to make a cappuccino:
- Start by grinding your coffee beans. We recommend using a burr grinder on the fine to medium-fine setting.
- Next, steam the milk. If you’re using an espresso machine, fill your frothing pitcher 1/3 full of the way full of cold milk. Then, release steam from the frothing wand for two seconds, insert the steaming wand into the milk, and froth until the milk doubles in volume and reaches 65 degrees. Tap the pitcher firmly on your counter to compress the foam.
- Now, pull a double shot of espresso directly into a preheated cappuccino cup. If you’ll be adding sweetener to your cappuccino, put it in the bottom of the cup before you brew your espresso. After you add your espresso, give it a good stir to dissolve the sweetener before you add your frothed milk.
- And finally, pour your frothed milk on top of the espresso. Start in the center and work in circles toward the outer rim of your cup. Enjoy!!!

Here are seven ways to make espresso for cappuccino without an espresso machine.
· MOKA POT
The Moka Pot produces a delicious, flavorful espresso-style coffee that’s not quite as bold as espresso made in an espresso machine.
To make espresso for cappuccino with your Moka Pot, fill the bottom chamber with water to just below the valve. Insert the basket and fill it with freshly ground coffee.
Assemble the Moka pot and heat it over medium-low heat on your stovetop until the water boils and coffee begins to come out of the center spout. Turn off the heat when your Moka Pot is full, and foam begins to appear on the spout.
· NESPRESSO MACHINE
A Nespresso Machine will yield an excellent espresso substitute for making cappuccino that’s very close to what you would get with an espresso machine.
To make espresso for cappuccino with your Nespresso machine, use a dark roast Ristretto capsule on the double shot setting. If you prefer a milder flavor, a medium roast Columbia capsule is also a great choice.

· DRIP COFFEE MAKER
To make a decent espresso for cappuccino in your drip coffee maker, ignore the reservoir and add the water directly to the filter basket.
Place a filter in the basket and measure 4 tablespoons of ground coffee into the filter. Put your preheated mug under the filter basket, then heat four ounces of water on the stove until almost boiling.
Pour just a little bit of hot water over the grounds and let it sit for 30 seconds to allow the coffee to bloom. Then pour the rest of the water in and let it drip through the filter into your mug to make your espresso.
It won’t be quite the same as true espresso, but it’s as close as you can get with a drip coffee maker.
